Horizon is pleased to announce the official registration and opening of Bushbury School in Wolverhampton.
Bushbury School has been designed to support up to 40 pupils aged 7-19 with Autism Spectrum Condition (ASC) and Speech, Language, and Communication Needs (SLCN), providing a highly specialised therapeutic environment where every pupil can thrive.
Bushbury School offers bright, contemporary teaching spaces thoughtfully designed to inspire curiosity and actively engage pupils in their learning experience. The school also includes safe, multifunctional co-regulation spaces, where pupils receive tailored support from clinicians to help regulate their emotions, ensuring they are in the optimal space to engage in their learning.
Bushbury School follows Horizon’s SHINE (Supporting Healing in Nurturing Environments) model, which is embedded throughout the school. This approach ensures that students’ social, emotional and mental health needs are met with compassion and therapeutic interventions, with a focus on long-term growth and wellbeing.
Plans have also been approved to further enhance the therapeutic support at the school with a brand-new sensory garden set to open soon. This garden is designed to promote sensory processing and improve communication skills for pupils. It is hoped the garden becomes a calming, therapeutic space where pupils can engage in activities that foster co-regulation and sensory stimulation through an expanded variety of plants, textures, and sounds supporting both their emotional well-being and education.
Tracey Capstick, Interim Head Teacher at Bushbury School said:
“I am confident that we will create an outstanding autism provision in the Midlands, sharing our knowledge and skills to make a meaningful impact on our students’ lives. All young people have a right to an education that is designed to meet their individual needs.”
Andrew Kitterick, Managing Director of Education said:
“It has been truly amazing to open our doors and welcome pupils to Bushbury for the first time, and I hope everyone who attends feels comfortable, and enjoys their time learning, developing, and making new friends. This project is the result of a collaborative effort from many passionate individuals, and I am incredibly grateful to everyone who has worked tirelessly over the past year to make this school a reality.
“Bushbury School is set to make a positive impact on the lives of young people and their families, eliminating the need for pupils to travel long distances to access the specialised education they deserve.”
The opening of Bushbury School is a key milestone in Horizon’s broader growth strategy this year, which includes the opening of three new specialist schools to address the rising demand for specialist SEND (Special Educational Needs and Disabilities) provision. The other two are in Sandwell and London.
