Special Educational Needs (SEN) refers to the additional support required by children and young people who face barriers to learning.
SEN can affect a child or young person's ability to learn in the following ways:
• Behaviour or ability to socialise
• Reading and writing
• Ability to understand things
• Concentration levels, for example, because they have attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD)
• Physical ability
Social Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs are a specific category of SEN that relate to the support a child or young person might need to manage their emotions and behaviour.
If you think your child or a young person in your care may have special educational needs, speak to one of our care, support, and education professionals for guidance and advice.
For children & young people with SEN, navigating the traditional educational system can be challenging. They may struggle to grasp concepts at the same pace as their peers or require alternative methods of learning to accommodate their unique learning styles.
Without the right support, these students may experience frustration, low self-esteem, and a sense of isolation.
Teachers working in SEN play a pivotal role in unlocking the potential of children who face barriers to learning.
Unlike traditional teaching methods, which may not cater to diverse learning needs, SEN teachers are trained to adapt their approaches to suit individual students. They possess the expertise to identify each child's strengths and challenges, tailoring lessons and interventions accordingly.
Teachers working in SEN understand that one size does not fit all when it comes to education. They provide personalised support that addresses the unique needs of each child, ensuring no one is left behind.
Our holistic approach to learning is designed to empower young people with Special Education Needs (SEN) by providing comprehensive support tailored to their unique challenges and strengths.
Our Educational Psychologist offers consultation and assessment on the educational and psychological strengths and needs of young people.
They work in collaboration with parents, carers, and young people promoting their involvement and participation in the assessment process. Our Educational Psychologist will support directly and indirectly to advise on appropriate interventions and strategies for young people. Our Educational Psychologist can advise and assess for some neurodiverse conditions such as dyslexia.
Our Occupational Therapist, Speech and Language Therapists, and Psychotherapists identify areas of support required which may or may not already be covered within a young person’s EHCP.
Our psychotherapeutic aspect is provided by creative psychotherapy practitioners. All our practitioners are trained to Masters level and are registered with their professional body.
Our therapists engage our students on a creative level, using narrative, metaphor, movement, and play to explore each student's individual experiences and thoughts at their own pace.
Creative psychotherapy often uses play, art, movement, drama, and music to explore and enable students to process their difficult early experiences. Using interventions tailored to individuals that build therapeutic relationships and support positive mental wellbeing. We offer individual and group therapy sessions.
Our Occupational Therapist support young people to access education, self-care, and leisure activities.
Using approaches of participation, sensory and physical development, and activity analysis.
Our Occupational Therapist support young people to gain mastery of the skills required to engage, access adaptations where necessary to increase participation, gain confidence in their abilities, and improve their quality of life. They may use sensory intervention and strategies to support regulation, engagement, independence, and the ability to successfully interact with the world around them.
Our Speech and Language Therapists offer insight into patterns of communication, supporting our care, support, and education professionals to provide adaptations for optimum accessibility as well as providing individual bespoke therapeutic support.
Creating class-based group programs to support development in working memory, social communication, and language comprehension provides intervention integrated with play and learning.
