Horizon Schools receive Bronze Skills Builder Award

Schools involved in the Skills Builder programme have been awarded a Skills Builder Bronze Award for their outstanding work in developing learners’ essential skills alongside their academic studies. The Skills Builder Universal Framework is the world’s leading tool for measuring and building essential skills.

Through the Skills Builder programme, young people learn to collaborate effectively, communicate confidently, and solve problems creatively. By fostering skills like teamwork and problem-solving in the classroom, students not only improve their academic outcomes but also build resilience and perseverance. As these essential skills carry into adulthood, they significantly reduce the likelihood of unemployment, increase lifetime earnings, and enhance overall wellbeing and life satisfaction.

We extend our deepest thanks to our Head of Careers, Careers Leaders and the participating schools for embracing this programme.

Sophie Deaville, Global Programmes Manager and MAT Lead for Horizon (2023-24) said:

“We are incredibly proud to work with Horizon Care & Education. Whilst recognising and celebrating the diversity of each setting, the partnership with Skills Builder provides an opportunity for school leaders to embed the shared language of the essential skills across the personalised and inclusive programmes of learning already in place. Last year, staff training and planning meetings with Skills Builder helped to ensure that staff across all settings were confident and well equipped to provide meaningful opportunities for learners to practice and build their skills. Individual settings started to explore the Skills Builder Hub, accessing high quality resources to explicitly teach and effective measurement tools to bring rigour and consistency to the assessment of essential skills.

In [the academic year] 2023-24, Arise Academy, Aspire Learning, Bright Minds Creative Academy, Olympus School and Brewood Secondary School all achieved a Bronze Award in recognition of their commitment to achieve best practice. In addition to this, Horizon Care and Education became the first setting to achieve a Skills Builder Bronze Award for their Careers Provision. This year, we are excited to continue working with Horizon Care and Education. It is hoped the end of 2025, all settings will achieve a Skills Builder Award and we will continue to work towards a Gold Award for the Careers Provision.”
